How to Get to Stari Grad on Hvar Island

Where is Stari Grad?

Stari Grad is a historic town located on Hvar, known for its relaxed atmosphere, stone streets, and authentic charm. It offers a quieter, more local alternative to the busier areas of the island - perfect for a slower, more considered experience.

How to Get to Hvar Island

Most travellers arrive from Split, the main transport hub on the Dalmatian coast.

Option 1: Ferry to Stari Grad (Recommended)

The most direct route is via ferry operated by Jadrolinija.

  • Route: Split → Stari Grad
  • Duration: approx. 2 hours
  • Suitable for: foot passengers, cars, and large luggage pieces

This is the best option if your destination is Stari Grad.

 

Option 2: Catamaran to Hvar Town

You can also take a passenger catamaran operated by Krilo, TP Line & Jadrolinja. The best website to search all of these companies timetables is here.

  • Route: Split → Hvar Town
  • Duration: approx. 1 hour
  • Foot passengers only 

From there, you’ll need to travel onward to Stari Grad (see below).

Important: Where the Ferry Actually Arrives

If you take the ferry to Stari Grad, you will arrive at:

Stari Grad Ferry Port

This is important:
The ferry port is not located in the town centre. It is instead located a little further out, but you have many options on how to get into the main town.

How to Get from the Ferry Port to Stari Grad Town

Once you arrive, getting into town is very simple. You have three easy options:

Bus (Best for most travellers)

  • Buses are timed with ferry arrivals. There are buses waiting for you in the carpark directly outside the ferry, simply hop on to the one that has a sign on the front window that says 'Stari grad' and pay the driver cash, no need to pre-book your spot.
  • Journey time: approx. 5 minutes
  • Stops in the centre of town

Taxi or Uber

  • Journey time: approx. 5 minutes
  • Ideal if you have luggage or want a direct transfer
  • Uber is new to the island, so there may be limited drivers

Walking

  • Around 20 minutes along the coastline
  • Flat and straightforward route
  • Suitable if travelling light or just having a day trip.
  • Just put your destination into Google Maps and it will show you the path.

How to Get to Stari Grad from Hvar town

If you arrive in Hvar Town via catamaran, Stari Grad is just a short journey away.

  • Travel time: approx. 20 minutes
  • Options: taxi, bus, or rental car/scooter

Visiting Stari Grad

Once you arrive in Stari Grad, everything is within walking distance. The town is compact, easy to navigate, and designed for slow exploration.
